This week your friends take a look at some new movies coming out in 2009. But since Count Vardulon and The Divemistress aren't privy to any information regarding the new batch of genre films, they're basing their analysis on titles alone. Film history correspondent Merman takes a look back at the greatest year in cinema, 1989, and the Count breaks some bad news to the DM. Also, there is no such thing as a PG-13 horror movie and Jason Statham is awesome.
You're right about Jaws and Poltergeist being excellent movies, Tara, but both were PG films, not PG-13. The reason we singled out the PG-13 rating was that its very inception was indicative of the culture of compromise and corporatization that has so harmed genre film in the past 25 years.
Also, Poltergeist was one of those famous 'studio twisted arms to get the MPAA to back off' movies - watch it today and it really feels like an R.
And hey, thanks for reminding me about Spiral - a film that we will now discuss on an upcoming Avod.
About the PG-13 thing, what about Jaws, Poltergeist, or Spiral? They're all pg-13 and good horror.
